France
This is a very beautiful part of France, one with a wonderfully interesting history. We enjoyed the contrasts of well-cultivated fields, views stretching for miles and the rugged beauty of the Causses and were impressed (and envious) of the care with which land-and-townscapes have been preserved for centuries. We can't say enough in thanks to our hosts, especially during a sudden illness of one of us (at Hermitage St Pierre near Nant) and of the help given by Mark and other Evaneos staff to change our itinerary. Planning with Christiana excellent, also
The best parts:
The highlights of our trip were: Toulouse - good walking city, beautiful churches, especially Les Jacobins; the locations concerned with the story of the Cathars, especially Montsegur; excellent private tours in Toulouse and Carcassonne with pleasant and knowledgable guides; pleasant accommodations at every stop with welcoming and helpful proprietors.
The worst parts:
Some difficulty in finding our accommodations, even with GPS and Michelin print-outs, especially in cities. Making town plans (maps) available would have been a tremendous help.

We both felt we got a real feel for France and loved all the people!! The French are so kind and hospitable. We can't wait to return! Also we will use and highly recommend Evaneos Travel for other European destinations!! We did everything we wanted to do except maybe shopping at the antique markets in Provence ( which my husband is probably grateful for! Ha!).
The best parts:
Our agent, Christiana, was so so wonderful!! She was patient & we quickly learned to trust her judgment on so much. I thought our day trips from Paris wouldn't be long enough, but trusted her that a half day for each would be plenty. She was absolutely correct. She checked on us our first few days in Paris and made us feel at home. Loved our day trip to Versailles and our guide, David, was terrific! Wish we could have spent more time in the gardens, though. It was a dreary, rainy day, so not the best for outdoor tours. Really pleased with all the hotels we were booked into and all but one of the tours in Provence & Bordeaux regions were great! Our private guide to St Emillion & Arcashon (sp?) was absolutely spectacular! The wine tours he arranged for us were perfect! Also we loved the Foodie Tour in Avignon!! Really helped us eat and live more like the locals! Avignon & St Emmillon were our very favorite cities! Also the Lumeniere Light, Sound & Visual Arts experience in old mine caves near St Remy was incredible!!
The worst parts:
Our day tip to Giverny was good. We loved the site, but our guide was not great. There were only 4 in our group, and one was a single elderly gentleman who needed a little extra attention. Our guide just dropped us all off in the parking lot & gave us a time to be back. My husband & I and another traveler had to help the poor man thru all of the site after a very brief set of instructions by our guide. Also we didn't like the guide or the tour of city of Aix en Provence. Our tour mates were the best part of that trip. Not a place worth seeing; just a big city with a few old buildings. I wanted to hit some of the great market days in the Provence region, and our agent assured me there were great markets all the time. We were never in the right village on the right day for any of them, though. Maybe next trip....
