According to legend, a giant lies snoring in the Andes of Patagonia, and whoever should wake this Patagonian colossus will suffer his wrath. As I'm not intimidated by size, I decided to see if there was any truth to this folk tale with my very own eyes! Tronador is a volcano located on the border between Argentina and Chile. Its name, "Tronador", means "thunderous" in English and refers to the noise made by the Los Alerces waterfall located not far away … or the snoring of the giant. You'll have to decide which for yourself! Tronador lies in two of Andean Patagonia's national parks: <a href="/argentina/">Nahuel Huapi</a> in Argentina and Vicente Pérez Rosales in Chile. So what's unusual in particular about this 3,900-metre high volcano? It has three snow-capped peaks: Pico Chileno, Pico Argentino and Pico Central, which straddles the border between the two countries. I had the opportunity to see this monster of nature for the first time when I went on a hike through the visual splendour of Nahuel Huapi Natural Park. However, I'm sorry to say I wasn't prepared to tackle the ascent: I was too frightened of coming face to face with the giant of the volcano. Ha ha!
