Lying only around fifty kilometres from the capital Yerevan, Mount Aragats rises up almost supernaturally from the surrounding plains, with its snow-capped peaks appearing like magic against the sky in the distance. This is certainly one of the most incredible places I've visited, and it calls to mind Mount Fuji in Japan to a certain extent. I was lucky enough to be able to go on a hike up Mount Aragats, though not to the top of the northern peak unfortunately, which at 4,090 metres is the highest in the country, but to the top of the 3,893-metre high southern peak, the ascent of which is easier and requires less equipment. Nevertheless, the views I had from up there were absolutely unforgettable, which is why I thoroughly recommend including Mount Aragats on your <a href="/armenia/">Armenian itinerary</a>.
