The Samaria gorge is a favourite spot for those who love action holidays. This 16km trek can be challenging. But the view is worth it! The Samaria gorge was made by a river hollowing out the rocks in the mountains and it is spectacular, at a certain point in the gorge a passage just 3 metres wide and 300 metres high, has been formedthe famous « portes» or « Iron Gates ».
During your journey you can admire the wonderful maple trees which overhang the path and the ochre and anthracite striated rock faces. The three « Iron Gates » on the trek are all equally wonderful, and the second one particularly so: a real colossus with its Calabria pines hanging onto the rock face. The streams which appear all along the way provide a welcome coolness.
To keep your strength up, I suggest you to stop at the Christos point just before the third « Iron Gate »; or further up the gorge, at the village of Samaria: a hamlet which was abandoned when the the national park was created and a strange place with its houses, outbuildings and the Ossia Maria chapel.
