The market in Bati is really impressive and worth the detour! It's one of the most important (if not the most important) in the country. It's the cultural and commercial crossroads for the Oromos, Amhara and Afar people of this region; the latter being desert nomads. 
This market is sprawling, and is divided into three sections: the grains market, the livestock market and a general market with crafts. It's best to be accompanied by a guide who will explain the customs of each tribe and help you integrate fully! 
The first two markets are to view from afar; the number of animals (camels, cows, sheep, goats...) and even the dust is impressive! The third one is more interesting as I was able to find magnificent craft pieces there: colourful loincloths, jewellery, traditional embroidered clothes, knives... Highly recommended!
