When I came over from Europe, at the end of 2013, I hooked up with my wife, who'd come here to spend a holiday in Flores (Petén). We immediately headed off to Semuc Champey, via Cobán. First surprise : Semuc Champey, one of the tourist trail must-sees on any <a href="/guatemala/">trip to Guatemala</a> is quite hard to reach. After 70km and 3 hours of bumping along a gravel road, we finally found ourselves in the town of Lanquín. I have to say, the view along this mountainside road was stunning, which made up for the evangelical music that the bus driver blared out at full volume! Two days later, it took us an hour to cover the 7km between Lanquín and the natural pools at Semuc Champey, on a road that was equally rugged. But boy was it worth it! Turquoise pools in the heart of lush scenery, with water that was so warm you could easily soak there for hours on end. It was one of the most beautiful places that I'd visited in my life. Note: the hotels offer inclusive guided tours via local agencies, so that before visiting the site, you can enjoy other activities, such as exploring a cave. It's worth being kitted up - torch, suitable trainers - as, despite being accompanied by a guide, accidents are quite frequent and a friend of mine broke their foot...
