These are my Israeli friends who helped me discover the Makhtesh Ramon during my first <a href="/israel/">stays in Israel</a>. As lovers of walking and outdoor activities, they took to inviting me to accompany them every time they left for an excursion. I think that is what made the biggest impression on me in 20 years, this strange sensation brought on by absolute silence. The silence there is such that it is almost deafening. Beyond the silence, there is something slightly magical about the evolution of a crater big enough to give an impression of immensity, but small enough to see it all at once. Walks on site are really worth going for but you really must be well-equipped: take a hiking map and let someone know here know where you will be. For those less adventurous, it is entirely possible to admire the beauty of the Makhtesh Ramon by walking the length of the cliff at the bottom of the town of Mitzpe Ramon where observation points have been set up.
