One of the last remaining truly wild and natural areas in Europe, the primeval forest of Białowieża is home to a rich variety of wildlife concealed amongst its incredible vegetation and thousand-year-old oaks, and hidden in its streams and rivers. The park is especially famous for its bison and is home to one of the largest free-living populations of these animals in Europe, and this is in addition to the wolves, deer and wild goats that are also to be found here. I explored Białowieża National Park by going on a guided tour organised by the visitor centre on the Polish side. During the tour, which lasted the whole day, we penetrated quite deeply into the dense forest and got to see birds, bison and the area's rich local fauna. This park offers the opportunity for a truly off-the-beaten-track experience that anyone with an interest in nature is sure to find fascinating.
