We visited Gaspésie National Park during our <a href="/canada/">Canadian road trip.</a> We chose to hike around Mont-Albert, a trail that was recommended by travellers whom we met at the hostel where we were staying. We had also heard good things about some slightly shorter hikes that are still worth the effort: Mont Jacques-Cartier and Mont Ernest-Laforce. It's all set to be a tough day's hiking - covering a distance of 17.4 km in seven hours, with 870m of altitude change. The first two hours are intense, with an 800m climb through the forest before reaching the Sommet Albert Nord, but as they say - no gain without pain. That's when we picnicked on the tundra plateau with the reward of seeing a few caribou. The descent is just as arduous, but the landscapes are so magnificent that they almost made us forget how challenging it was. We also encountered hares and partridges as we walked, which motivated us further. To sum up Gaspésie National Park - our legs won't forget it but what a breathtaking landscape!

Between the mountains and the oceans, Gaspésie is one of the wildest and most beautiful regions of Quebec, and a mecca for walkers. Hovering between the earth and the sea, the park has 3,000 km of coast, some of the highest summits in the east of Canada and breathtaking scenery. Not forgetting the magnificent forests, which are home to a rich variety of animals (bears, beavers, moose, caribou...) and which is covered in breathtaking colour in the Autumn. This is the Canada you have dreamed about. I have to mention the Graves walk which hugs the ocean for 15.2 kilometres. The region is authentic and welcoming thanks to its Quebecois who live lives in touch with the sea and are happy to share the traditions they love. It's also a favourite destination of fishermen, drawn by the abundant salmon.

On the south bank of the Saint Laurent estuary, Gaspésie (Forillon) National Park is wild, peaceful and genuine.
